Disease and Isolation

Disease and Isolation

This photo is of Charlie and Susie Sampson. They had a son and lived on a homestead on the Elwha during a time when the village was being ravaged by diseases. Many people were getting sick and dying from lack of cures. Charlie and Susie decided to take their son and live in isolation up the Elwha River at a placed called the Meadows, located by Lake Mills on the eastern slope. It was known to the Tribe as a place to go and gather medicinal plants.   The people who live below knew that the Sampson family was alright because they could see smoke coming from their chimney. The Sampson family moved back down after living in the Meadows for eight years.
